Performers provide their own soundtracks, sound effects, live music--whatever they want, really. It's in a bar, it's informal, and past events have featured everything from live guitar accompaniment, to broken-window sound effects (courtesy of a bottle scrounged from behind the bar), to audiences cheering work made by both professionals and five-year-olds with crayons.

And it's all free!

Participating in this edition of Comics Underground:

• Writer and artist MICHAEL ALLRED is the Eisner-nominated creator of the iconic Madman, not to mention The Atomics and Red Rocket 7. He's also the lead singer and guitarist for the Gear, and he might--just might--be performing some music at Comics Underground.

• Writer JEN VAN METER is the creator of the much-loved series Hopeless Savages, published by Portland's Oni Press. She's also written for Dark Horse, Marvel, and DC. Van Meter will be presenting--wait for it--new Hopeless Savages material.

• Writer and artist JONATHAN CASE recently drew the Eisner-nominated graphic novel Green River Killer. He'll be presenting material from his first graphic novel, Dear Creature, which Kirkus Reviews called "a funny, bizarre, unexpected pleasure."

• Writer JOE KEATINGE used to be known as the co-editor of the Eisner-winning anthology Popgun. More recently he's made a name for himself as a writer, thanks to his work on Glory and Hell Yeah from Image Comics. Keatinge will take this opportunity to share a series close to his heart: CC Beck's Captain Marvel.

This time around, Comics Underground will coincide with the highly regarded Stumptown Comics Festival. Following Comics Underground on Thursday, April 26, the Stumptown Comics Fest will take over various venues throughout Portland from April 28-29, celebrating independent creators and offering panels, workshops, and parties.

More info about the event, including rundowns of past installments, can be found at comicsunderground.com.

Over the course of three short stories, our metaldude heroes love, fight, hang out at the spa with Lars and James, squabble about property values with friendly satanist neighbors Hall and Oates, and work out their differences in therapy.
Benjamin Marra visits from Brooklyn for a very special art exhibit and to celebrate the release of two new comics. First up from Traditional Comics is the debut issue of his new series, Lincoln Washington Free Man.

It's 1868, the hostile period succeeding the American Civil War. When the freed slave Lincoln Washington shows up in the small South Carolina town, Butchergrass, with coin and a deed to a plot of land the locals are none too happy about it. In particular, Jasper, the son of a wealthy plantation owner. Lincoln, accused of a crime he didn't commit, must draw on centuries of racial injustice to give him the power to fight his enemies and defend his inherently human right to freedom! Witness the beginning of this Reconstructionist-Era action epic!!

Floating World has also teamed up with Traditional Comics to publish a broadsheet newsprint (15" x 22.75") edition of Benjamin Marra's American Psycho.

Employing Raymond Pettibon's aesthetics and inspired by the movie "American Psycho", these 28 illustrations "seem almost mathematically calculated to haunt the eyes they meet: whether it's the sublimely balanced blacks and whites or the point-of-impact axe to neck shots." - Matt Seneca, Comics Alliance

Both books make their Portland debut at this event. The artwork will be on exhibit during Stumptown weekend, until Sunday April 29th.
